2014 was an interesting year for tech and gadgets – Apple released updated products and created the predictable frenzy associated with their ever-so-small upgrades, Windows 10 was announced, leaving everyone wondering what happened to 9, and wearable technology became the sweetheart of every company trying to be first the capitalise on the ‘next big thing’.
With 2014 well and truly behind us, now would be a good time to look at what we can expect from the tech world’s big-hitters in 2015.
Firstly, and most hotly-anticipated is the Apple Watch. The only real confirmed details are the watch’s appearance, which we know will come in a range of stylish and chic designs. This is a shrewd move from Apple, as they clearly understand that the future of wearables relies on people feeling comfortable in them. The watch is iOS 8 friendly, meaning you’ll need to have a reasonably recent iPhone in order to get notifications to your wrist. In it’s simplest terms, the watch beams notifications from the ‘simple’ apps on your phone to the watch, eliminating the need to keep taking your phone out of your pocket every time you feel a vibration. Whilst it may save needless phone-checking, only time will tell if the watch will serve a purpose beyond being an extension of the iPhone/iPad range. It may prove to be a costly experiment for company and customers alike.
It’s not product specific, but the advances made in Bendable Displays in 2014 are sure to continue into 2015. 2014 saw the arrival of curved OLED televisions, but the curve is static and cannot be changed. Now scientists in Japan have developed a display that is perfectly flexible without any loss of performance, and the world waits to see how this can be applied to existing technology. Mobile phones which fold out to become tablets are one of the most common suggestions, and it is easy to understand why. What other practical uses can you think of? Let us know in the comments.
Virtual reality – a big hit in the 1980s is set to make a big comeback in 2015, most famously from Oculus Rift, who hit the headlines in March 2014 when Facebook acquired the company for around $2 billion (~£1.3 billion). The idea behind OR is a virtual reality headset to create immersive experiences for the user. Initially, when the headset is launched sometime in 2015, it is expected that the primary use for it will be for gamers who will benefit from a more 360-degree experience when playing first-person games. Beyond this, there could be more practical uses such as teaching people to drive, design, cognitive therapies and even treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
